With all the tools that are available on the Internet nowadays, creating games is no longer something that only professionals can do. A shining piece of proof is Aseprite, which can be used to draw and animate sprites. Besides drawing a sprite from the ground up, you can make use of a wide variety of brushes and other special tools, to animate your sprite and make all sorts of fine tweaks. If you are working on a pixel art game, you can give it a good and original look with this piece of software.

Aseprite is free to try, without any noticeable restrictions. The application comes in a small ZIP archive and you only need to extract its contents, before running the application through its executable. It doesn't have any special requirements and it doesn't use a significant amount of memory or processing power.

The main editing area, on the user interface, is surrounded by a color palette, brushes and layer manager and you can also find a wide range of options in the top menus. Though the large amount of options may intimidate some users, figuring out how everything works shouldn't be a challenge, even if you don't look over the rich documentation, on the software's website.

You can draw anything, from sprites to pixel-based sceneries. The brushes placed at your disposal give you a good level of control over each pixel. Combine this with the possibility of switching between colors at a moment's notice or creating custom brushes, and you will be able to create some top-notch pixel art.

The software combines layer and frame management into a single tool, which makes sprite animation a smooth process. You can manipulate individual layers on each frame and you can also enable an onion skin mode, to reference other frames while animating. Also, the animation can be played at any time, directly in the main editing area or in a special preview window. The more you look through Aseprite's features, the more you will be convinced that it has everything you would expect from a professional animation software.

When it comes to animating sprites and creating pixel art, you can truly bring your work to life with Aseprite.

Pros

Aseprite's drawing tools allow you to create high-quality pixel art. It lets you edit layer by layer and frame by frame. The software doesn't need to be installed and it doesn't use too many resources.

Cons

There are no serious issues to mention.
